ERIN MAGEE, CFP®, Investment Advisor for Harbourfront Wealth Management in Burlington, Ontario

ERIN MAGEE

“My approach is based on understanding you as an individual”

Erin Magee (CFP ® ), Investment Advisor for Harbourfront Wealth Management in Burlington, Ontario embodies a holistic approach to financial advisement, intertwining expertise with empathy to guide her clients through life’s financial complexities.

Erin’s career began in 1998 working in consolidations, finance, and audits in Toronto. “Having twins by 2001 made living in Georgetown tricky, as commuting to and from downtown Toronto every day became impractical,” she says. “For this reason, I chose to pause my career for four years.”

By 2007, Erin started on a path with a financial firm. By 2015, she obtained her Certified Financial Planner (CFP ® ) designation, leveraging her background in finances and her drive to help others in similar life transitions as she previously experienced. “Knowing first-hand what it was like to become a new mother, I aspired to become the trusted advisor for individuals undergoing significant life changes, just as I had experienced myself.”

In June of 2022, following her tenure, Erin made the decision to join Harbourfront Wealth Management as a proud equity-partner. “This move allowed me the freedom to prioritize my clients’ needs over corporate interests and product sales, a value I hold dear,” she says. “It was a risky endeavour, as I invested everything, even risking my family’s financial security. However, my conviction in doing what is right for my clients was unwavering.”

Empathetic Financial Guidance

Erin brings a unique perspective to her role as a Financial Advisor, grounded in her identity as a woman.

“Rather than focusing solely on assets or recommending the perfect investment strategy, my approach is based on understanding clients on a personal level,” she begins. “Sure, I can handle the numbers and technical aspects effortlessly, but I am passionate about wanting to hear about your family, your concerns, and what keeps you awake at night. It is important to me to understand clients and how I can help ease their worries.”

“Growing up without a silver spoon has made me incredibly attuned to client’s emotions and vulnerabilities. It’s astonishing how often clients, especially when facing daunting challenges like health concerns or divorce, express feeling overwhelmed after interacting with professionals who may come across as cold or impersonal.”

“When they come to me, I make it my priority to provide comfort and understanding.”

This approach has earned her the role of a trusted confidant. Erin mentions, “Countless times, clients have reached out during pivotal life events, whether it’s leaving a career behind, navigating a divorce, or facing other significant changes. They call me for guidance after pivotal moments in their lives, looking for clarity and direction.”

“My practice reflects this trust, as it is entirely referral-based,” she says. Being less inclined to use traditional marketing strategies, Erin embraces the organic growth that comes from building genuine connections.

Her client base spans various age groups, but she tends to attract younger clients in their 50s to 70s who value her personalized and hands-on approach. “A majority of my clients are incredibly active and engaged, with many being avid hikers, hockey players, and individuals who embrace life fully.”

Tailored Financial Solutions: Customized Strategies for Every Client

Erin’s advisory approach is far from generic, tailored to the unique circumstances of each client rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all mentality. “For me, tax planning is a significant aspect–the sooner we start, the better. By incorporating tax planning early on, we can explore creative strategies beyond just RRSPs and TFSAs, thereby maximizing savings.”

When it comes to working with multiple generations within families, Erin mentions “I’ve had the privilege of advising families spanning four generations. For these instances, it is essential that we establish structures to protect assets, such as cottage properties. With this, we can ensure smooth transitions across generations without burdening heirs with unnecessary tax liabilities.”

In addition to financial strategies, Erin places significant emphasis on intangible aspects, such as fostering open communication and understanding within families. “Crafting well-structured wills in collaboration with lawyers is crucial to prevent disputes and maintain family harmony,” she says. “I strive to ask probing questions to uncover aspects that may not be immediately apparent, ensuring that the plan we develop is comprehensive and secure.”

“Ultimately, when I offer advice, I do so with the understanding that I’ll be there to support you for the long haul, ensuring that my guidance remains relevant and effective over time.”

Redefining Success and Empowering Women

Having done volunteer experience with at-risk youth and refugees, Erin is committed to making a positive impact beyond traditional client relationships.

“For me, money is not only about rates of return or financial figures; it is a tool for providing security and options, for ensuring that people can sleep soundly at night knowing they are taken care of.”

Success for Erin lies in providing clients with the reassurance and peace of mind they seek. “Seeing clients' reactions when they hear they are on track to retiring comfortably is incredibly rewarding,” she says.

Much of the success in her approach is owed to having a strong and diverse team. Erin mentions “Joining a firm with a blend of both women and men has been a breath of fresh air. As a female equity-partner and part-owner, I have a seat at the table and am respected for my contributions.”

“It’s clear to me that it’s time to seek out environments where diversity and inclusion are prioritized.”

At Harbourfront Wealth Management, their team has created dynamic mentorship opportunities known as the ‘Women’s High Five’. “This group, comprising of female advisors and several other women within the firm, offers a platform for collaboration, camaraderie, and empowerment, fostering a sense of community and solidarity.”

Optimism, Perspective, and Work-Life Balance

Reflecting on past sacrifices made for her career, including enduring challenging work conditions and missing out on family time, Erin now recognizes the necessity of balance. She says, “My husband, who is quite the nature enthusiast, and I share a love for the outdoors, often exploring the Bruce Trail with our rescue dog. I also enjoy spending time gardening, hiking, or on the back of our motorcycle, often heading to the beach. These moments are my happy place, and I’ve learned that I can’t neglect them for the sake of work.”

“Finding this balance is crucial not only for my well-being, but it also allows me to show up fully for myself, my family, and my clients.”

Looking forward, Erin is excited about the prospect of bringing forth positive energy, which has been instilled in her by her new team at Harbourfront Wealth Management. “In my 18 years in the industry, this is the first time I have felt this level of enthusiasm about my work and the impact I can make. I am excited about the possibilities that lie ahead.”
