“Wealth - From Both Sides of the Balance Sheet”
Tania Kvakic, Senior Vice-President, Financial Advisor, and long-time member of RBC Wealth Management’s Senior Consulting Group always wanted to make a difference in people’s lives. Originally, she thought this would involve of a career in medicine. Then, a cousin introduced her to a different way of helping people.
“One of my cousins was working for RBC Dominion Securities in Montreal. She suggested that while I was saving for medical school, I consider a career in banking. I’m glad I listened to her. Because today, I understand both sides of the balance sheet, as well as other important financial concepts including debt, credit, and cash flow management. As a result, I am in a much better position to give timely and relevant financial advice,” Tania Kvakic says.
At RBC, Tania helps wealthy individuals/families, business owners, professionals/executives, and sports (MLB/NHL) and entertainment professionals, achieve optimum financial health. Her expertise encompasses strategic wealth planning and investing, retirement planning, inter generational wealth planning, estate planning services, business succession planning, insurance and tax planning strategies, credit and credit analysis, commercial real estate lending, as well as domestic and international trusts. She has a broad and deep network of professionals with whom she works. These relationships allow Tania to bring the right team to the table.
Wealthy individuals often work, play, and invest globally. It can be challenging to negotiate the differences in regulatory environments, and tax planning, succession planning, and even business planning requirements, even between countries that are geographically close, like Canada and the United States. Clients rely on Tania, who has more than sixteen years of cross-border and international experience, to help them manage and profit from these differences. “I have an international clientele and face-to-face meetings are one of the perks associated with my job – if clients can’t come to me, I will take a plane, train or automobile and go to them,” she adds.
Philosophy & Approach
“It’s impossible to develop a customized financial strategy without knowing what is important to the individual. It is also hard to grasp the full impact of personal information over the phone or through a video chat. I want to be able to look into the clients’ eyes and to see their body language when we’re talking. This shows respect.” Tania’s professional advice is always tailored to suit the individual, family, or business with whom she is working.
“Each client has different needs, wants, goals, and risk tolerances,” she adds. “You have to have the right mixture of knowledge and experience to create a customized wealth plan that both addresses and celebrates these differences. If it was just about purchasing a certain fund or stock, the client could just call a broker and be done with it.”
“Besides French and English, Finance is just another language I have learned to speak,” Tania says with a smile. “You can’t customize something for someone if you don’t know anything about them which is why she dedicates hundreds of hours to getting to know clients.“ Founder and rhythm guitarist of the Beatles, John Lennon, once said, “Life happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” Lennon encapsulates the paradox of our lives – although it is important to plan, it is the things that happen to us on our life’s journey, that provide the depth, texture and meaning to our lives. I want to be one of the first calls clients make when something changes such as getting married, having a baby, signing a big contract, or starting a business.”
Most people usually know where they want to go but may not know the best route to take. This is especially true of successful individuals, who are often so focused on being the best in their niche, sport or profession that they don’t have the time or the interest in focusing on anything else. If something happens, like selling the business, getting married, or becoming sick or disabled, most people have no idea what to do next. That’s why it’s important to have a plan in place.” Tania helps clients prioritize their financial goals and address any concerns, especially about things like intergenerational wealth transfer.
“I want to know everything in your life, including your values, your background, and your relationship to the money. I review everything in your financial footprint, including budget, cash flow, credit cards, and existing insurance coverage. I also review all relevant legal documents including pre-nups, post-nups, trusts, wills and powers of attorney. We have many conversations about what you want to achieve, how you think about and manage money, including your commitment to saving. I am always non-judgmental and discrete. I am humbled to be a confidant, trusted advisor, and friend. In fact, we grow so close to each other, that it almost feels like we are members of the same family.”
“I know it’s hard to believe, but some wealthy people have a hard time with money. Some are so scared about making a mistake that they are afraid to act. The answer is clarity. Clients need to understand what they are doing and why. I consider it a very good day when a client walks away from a meeting feeling more empowered and comfortable. No one should ever feel like they are in the dark about their finances,” she explains.

“My parents used to say, “It’s not that you can’t do something, you can; it's that you are choosing not to. You have two arms, two legs and a mouth. Even when you don’t know how to do something, do it anyway. You’ll learn as you go. I credit my parents for my can-do attitude,” she says.

As a last word, Tania says, “Bottom line, I am a people and a relationship person. When I focus on being myself, being clear, providing an extraordinary level of service, and demonstrating a commitment to life-long learning, things tend to work themselves out. I started my career as a banker, was promoted to a relationship manager, then to private banker, and finally,to financial advisor, coach, and cheerleader. I love every one of my clients. It is a special blessing to be surrounded by and to learn from these exceptionally talented and successful individuals. They open up their world to me which inspires me to be better, and to work even harder. That’s what makes us a great team.”
